Vivian Kalb
Middle School Science / Math
Vivian Kalb is our middle school science teacher at Holy Spirit. Mrs. Kalb has lived in California her whole life, attending Catholic middle and high school before earning her degree in Chemistry at UC Davis. Mrs. Kalb describes her approach to teaching science this way:
“Science is not a list of facts, nor is it a specific career. It is a way of thinking about the world around us. My hope is to guide my students to develop their curiosity and their critical thinking skills so that they can be lifelong scientists, no matter what career they happen to choose. I also believe that every student can be a great scientist and a great mathematician, even if some take a little more time to get there than others. I am always happy to give students extra help when they request it, to make sure that they have every possible opportunity to succeed.”
Mrs. Kalb finds that Holy Spirit students are kind and have a passion for learning, and grow in virtue every day. She finds that what “really gets students passionate about science is experiencing it for themselves with activities” so aims to incorporate weekly activities related to the topics students are learning in class like determining whether the reaction of baking soda and vinegar is exothermic or endothermic, looking at images of cells under microscopes, and observing rock samples to compare and contrast types of rock. Mrs. Kalb also notes that the annual science fair is a chance for our middle school students to showcase their creativity and scientific thinking!
In her free time, Mrs. Kalb enjoys cooking new recipes and studying foreign languages.
